Biography
Sue has exhibited and sold her work on a regular basis since 1996 in London, Kent and Bristol.
She has a BA (Hons) degree in Communication and Image Studies, a Certificate in Contemporary Fine Art and studied stone carving from 1992 to 2007 in Kent and at City & Guilds School of Art in London. In 2006 she was sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund to attend a Purbeck Marble workshop in Dorset.
From 2002 until 2009 she took part in Artists’ Open Houses in Kent and Bristol.
All of Sue’s stone carvings are made by hand, without the use of power tools. These often deeply carved pieces evolve gradually over several months. To allow light to penetrate her work she often carves through from one plane to another. This is seen with great effect in the stone heads. Some surfaces are polished, others deliberately left uncarved or heavily textured, increasing the interplay of light and shade, so defining the form.
As in her carvings so in her paintings texture is important. She creates it through layering paint and using tools to incise the surface. Paint is applied, scraped back and reapplied. Her paintings are suffused with bold colour. Glazes create depth and density. On some the paint is drizzled across the canvas creating sweeping arcs of colour and texture.
Sue's love of travelling has meant she has visited many countries including China, Greece, Morocco, Nepal and Spain. She has lived in Cuba and France, where she now lives permanently. Fabric and objects from her travels are often used as inspiration together with her diaries, sketchbooks and photographs.
