All of Sue’s stone carvings are made by hand, without the use of power tools. These often deeply carved pieces evolve gradually over several months. To allow light to penetrate her work she often carves through from one plane to another. This is seen with great effect in the stone heads. Some surfaces are polished, others deliberately left uncarved or heavily textured, increasing the interplay of light and shade, so defining the form.

As in her carvings so in her paintings texture is important. She creates it through layering paint and using tools to incise the surface. Paint is applied, scraped back and reapplied. Her paintings are suffused with bold colour. Glazes create depth and density. On some the paint is drizzled across the canvas creating sweeping arcs of colour and texture.

Sue has lived in France and Cuba and travelled in Europe, China and Nepal. Fabric and objects from these travels are often used as inspiration together with her diaries, sketchbooks and photographs.
